Frequently asked questions
These are the questions parents ask us most. If yours is missing, write to us at support@juhupost.com.
Setup
What do we need for Juhupost?
A mailbox for your child with a provider that offers IMAP and SMTP, and two Android devices: one for you and one for your child. Either can be a phone or a tablet. Setup takes about fifteen minutes. See the guide
Is there Juhupost for iPhone and iPad?
No, Juhupost is only available for Android. A version for iPhone and iPad isn't planned.
Why doesn't Gmail work?
For Gmail, Google requires signing in through Google's servers. That doesn't fit our promise that your mail stays with your provider only. Good choices are mailbox.org, Posteo, your own domain, GMX or WEB.DE. Guides for each provider
My child already has a mailbox. Do I have to approve everything again?
No. Whatever is already in the inbox when you set up Juhupost stays there and counts as approved. That also applies to devices you pair later. In the “First contacts” step, the app lists the people the mailbox has already written to under “From earlier emails”, with the number of mails. You add whoever you like.
Can we use our own mailbox?
Better not. Juhupost creates a folder in the mailbox and moves mail from strangers to the review. In your own mailbox that would mix up your mail. Create a separate one for your child.
Does the mailbox cost money?
That depends on the provider. GMX and WEB.DE are free and show ads in their webmail. mailbox.org and Posteo charge a small monthly fee and are ad-free. Juhupost itself never shows ads.
Does my child need to know the password?
No. You enter the password on your device. Your child's device receives it encrypted through the QR code when you pair it. Your child never sees it.
Safety and privacy
Can strangers write to my child?
Anyone who knows the address can send a mail. Mail from senders who aren't in the address book goes to the review, though. Your child only sees it once you approve it.
Do we as parents read everything?
No. You see mail from and to strangers. What your child writes with approved contacts stays between them, and the app tells your child so.
What about forged senders?
Juhupost checks the DKIM signature of every mail on the device. If there's no proof that the mail really comes from the sender's domain, it goes to your review, even if the address is in the address book. For contacts with small providers that don't use DKIM, you can relax this.
Can Juhupost read our mail?
No. The app has no server of its own and talks directly to your mailbox. Mail and settings never pass through us. More about safety and privacy
Can my child change the settings?
No. Settings only exist in the parent area. On your child's device it's protected by your parent PIN.
What happens to links and pictures from the internet?
Juhupost never loads pictures from the internet, so no sender learns whether or when a mail was read. You decide whether links can be tapped.
Can my child read their mail somewhere else?
Only with the password, and your child doesn't know it. If you also want to control which apps and which browser your child uses, set up Google Family Link.
Family and buying
How much does Juhupost cost?
Juhupost is free, with every protection feature. Family is a one-time in-app purchase of €4.99 through Google Play. Free and Family compared
Is Family a subscription?
No. You pay once and it stays unlocked.
What does Family add?
Several children and devices, writing to new addresses, the instant alert for your child's requests, Kuvi stickers and drawing, usage times, photos for contacts and all colour themes.
Does the purchase cover all our devices?
Yes. You buy it on a parent device, and it unlocks every paired device, including your child's.
We have a new phone. Is the purchase lost?
No. Pair the new device and Family is unlocked there too. On a parent device, “Restore purchase” also brings the purchase back through your Google account.
Everyday use
When does new mail arrive?
Straight away while the app is open. Otherwise the devices check at set times, out of the box every two hours from 12:00 to 19:00 on weekdays and from 8:00 to 19:00 at weekends. You can change the times in the settings.
Can my child delete mail?
Your child can put mail away. It goes to the mailbox archive, where you can find it in any mail app. Deleting for good isn't possible for your child.
What age is Juhupost for?
Juhupost is made for children aged about 6 to 12. Children who can't read well yet can have mail read out to them and dictate their reply. Guide: email for kids
Can my child open attachments?
Pictures are shown straight away. Other files only open once you approve them, and then only in the built-in viewer.
Read-aloud or dictation doesn't work. What can we do?
Juhupost uses Android's text-to-speech and voice input. If the voice for your language is missing, install it in the Android settings under language or text-to-speech.
Problems
Setup can't find the servers.
See the guide for your provider. With GMX and WEB.DE, IMAP must first be allowed in the webmail. Otherwise, enter the servers under “Enter servers manually”.
A mail doesn't reach my child.
If the sender isn't in the address book or the proof of authenticity is missing, the mail waits for you in the review in the parent area.
We've forgotten the parent PIN.
Tap “Forgot PIN?” when asked for the PIN and reset it with the mailbox password.
All parent devices are gone. What now?
Set up Juhupost on a new device with the mailbox password and enter the recovery code from setup. Your contacts and rules are then back.
Pairing doesn't work.
The QR code and number are valid for five minutes and only once. Start pairing again on your device and scan the new code. If that doesn't help, report the problem to us.
